Heifer Care Facility Avon,NY

It all started…

When Scott Stokoe would buy and sell dairy heifers to local farms as they grew their herds. For many years we raised heifers in any available barn that was too small to store machinery. In 1992 the Avon farm was purchased and our heifer business moved from Scottsville to Avon. We were excited to grow into the old “RuanneDairy /Hanover Holsteins” barns. Scott, Debra and Kim sold many heifers until 2010 when advancements in cow breeding made it possible for dairy farmers to grow from within their own herds.

Times Changed…..

The farm now raises heifers for local farms on a contract basis. Brendan and Sara spend their days feeding and caring for up to 700 animals. The heifers are fed a sweet corn silage, dry hay, grain and a mineral mix to keep all animals growing at nutritionist guided targets for daily weight gain.

Stewardship Practices at heifer farm:

We have raised heifers under a medium Confined Animal Feeding Operation(CAFO) with guidance from WNY Crop Assoc. since 1996. Working to be good neighbors and good stewards of our resources. We have implemented all best management practices (BMP).  We have exceeded standards in the fall of 2019 by installing a poly liner to our existing earthen storage that collects the silage leachate and barnyard runoff.

Also in the fall of 2019, we constructed a concrete manure storage at our main barn giving us ample storage for all manure waste during the winter months .   Both improvements were built to NYS Soil and Water and US Natural Resource Conservation Service standards.

Our intent is to use liquid from earthen storage to make the heifer manure a pump-able product that we can drag line apply to the crop fields for the most efficient use of nutrients and while being supportive to our neighbors.
